2020 freshmen welcome meeting and the "first lesson of Ideological and political education" held smoothly

On September 18, 2020, the icebreaking meeting was held for 2020 freshmen of CLSO-SZU. One hundred and seventy eight undergraduate and 75 graduate freshmen in 2020 attended the meeting. The meeting was hosted by Ms. Huang Bing-Chan from the student affairs office, CLSO-SZU.

Professor Ni Jia-Zan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences), honorary dean of the college, addressed the meeting. Professor Ni first congratulated the freshmen from all over the country for joining the family of CLSO. He delivered the speech with a delicate PPT entitled "University, a whole new beginning". Starting with the introduction of general trend throughout the world, which undergoing unprecedented changes in a century, professor Ni introduced disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), superconducting quantum computer, brain computer interface (BCI), etc., as well as the drastic changes in the post epidemic era. He also briefly described the future of Shenzhen and Shenzhen University, and the advantages of CLSO.

He hoped that all of the students could make full use of the favorable conditions of the region and the university, to establish a correct world view and outlook on life, to set clear purpose or goal of learning, and to change the method of study. All of these may play a vital role in one’s first year of commencing university. It is also important to cultivate independent spirit and to improve their overall quality, which can be done via learning from the older generation of scientists.

Dr. Huang Xia-Zi, one of the class advisors of the freshmen, spoke on behalf of the college, to express warm welcome to every student who came to the college. She believes that for freshmen, university life is novel, while brimming with challenges and expectations. Every student in this big family should be able to open a new chapter of life and become a better self!

Mr. Zhao Lin, the freshmen representative and PhD student, shared his study and living experience in of CLSO. He had made some achievements during his master study in CLSO, and had many valuable memories and emotions. He was grateful for the training given by the college and his supervisor. As a freshman, he will continue his study and research with enthusiasm, and complete his doctoral study. He also sent his best wishes to all of the students for their academic success and bright future!

Professor Hu Zhang-Li, Dean of the college, gave the first lesson of Ideological and political education entitled “Mission of the era and personal development planning”. He believed that our era is an exciting and great era. He described the great achievements, opportunities and challenges in the 40 years of reform and opening up, as well as the situation of the post epidemic era. Prof. Hu also gave a detailed introduction regarding the development process, teaching staff and faculty, teaching and research platforms, and research directions of the college. It is hoped that students can do a good job in both short-term and long-term planning, and should set clear personal goals that will help them achieving success in education and in life.

Mr. Liang Jie, Secretary of the Party committee of the college, gave freshmen the first ideological and political lesson “Get to know SZU, pursue your dream, and achieve what we have dreamt for". The talk included two parts: the University's situation and history and planning for the future. He elaborated the "one goal, two important stages, three major orientations, and four campuses" of SZU. He also showed us the "memorabilia" since the establishment of the university. Meanwhile, the major strategic achievements gained in the prevention and control of the disease during COVID-19 outbreak was introduced, while the matters to be cautious in the current epidemic stage have also been illustrated. He hopes that students can plan for the future and become college students with spirit, judgment, innovation and action.

The icebreaking meeting was successfully concluded in an exciting atmosphere. It is hoped that the freshmen of CLSO can adapt to the new style of study and living as soon as possible. Lets ride up the wind above open Roc Cityand the beautiful Lichi Garden and set sail from the big family CLSO.
